iPads take a lot of drops — off couches, out of school bags, off the edge of a desk. Before assuming a full screen replacement is needed, it's worth checking a few things first.
What to check before booking a repair
- Force restart the iPad. On Face ID iPads, press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. On Home button iPads, hold the top button and Home button together.
- Check whether the display image is actually fine underneath the crack. If the picture is clear, colours look normal and only the touch response is affected in the cracked area, that tells us something different to a screen with dead patches or discolouration.
- Avoid pressing on the cracked area. Every press flexes the glass slightly, which can spread a small crack further across the panel or push glass fragments into the digitizer layer beneath it — the crack you have today can get meaningfully worse by tomorrow.
- Take the case off and check the frame. If the aluminium body itself is bent from the drop, that's a separate issue from the glass and affects how the new screen will sit and seal.
Why an iPad screen is a bigger job than an iPhone's
An iPad's glass and digitizer are laminated across a much larger surface area than a phone's, using a wide bed of strong adhesive around the entire perimeter and often across the back of the panel too. That adhesive has to be softened evenly with heat and separated carefully — rush it, or heat one edge more than another, and it's easy to crack the glass further or flex the aluminium frame out of shape.
On most iPad models, the battery also sits directly beneath the display, edge to edge across a large portion of the case. That means the margin for error when prying up the old glass is smaller than it looks — a slipped opening tool doesn't just risk the screen, it risks puncturing a battery cell sitting right underneath it.
Why we're cautious about the cheapest DIY iPad glass kits
- Generic heat guns and plastic pry tools without proper suction handling can crack an already-damaged panel further within seconds
- Reapplying adhesive unevenly can leave the new screen sitting slightly proud at one edge, letting dust and moisture in over time
- A pierced or bent battery cell is a genuine fire risk, not just a cosmetic issue — this is the single biggest reason we recommend against rushed DIY openings on any device with a large internal battery
- Home button / Touch ID and Face ID components on some models are tied to the display assembly and need the same care as an iPhone's during removal
What our Brisbane iPad screen repair actually involves
We use controlled, even heat to release the adhesive bed safely, protect the battery cells during the lift, fit a full replacement adhesive seal rather than a partial patch, and test touch accuracy and display quality across the whole panel — not just the area that was cracked — before handing it back.
