What we fix on MacBooks

Intel and Apple silicon, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

  • No power, no chargeNo chime, no light, no response to the power button. Usually one failed part in the power circuit, not the whole logic board. See how we approach a dead board.
  • USB-C and MagSafe charging faultsCharges from one port only, charges slowly, or stops and starts. Each USB-C port has its own controller chip (Apple's CD3215 and CD3217 family), and they are a known weak point. See why USB-C charging fails.
  • Liquid damageCoffee, water or wine through the keyboard lands straight on the logic board. The board is opened, cleaned and the corroded parts replaced. Read what to do in the first five minutes.
  • Logic board faultsShuts down or restarts at random, runs only on the charger, fans at full speed, or starts and gives no picture.
  • Display and backlight faultsBlack screen with the Mac still running, a very dim image, uneven lighting along the bottom edge, or a cracked panel.
  • Battery replacementShort battery life, "Service Recommended", or a swollen battery lifting the trackpad. See battery replacement.
  • Keyboard faultsDead, sticky or repeating keys. On a MacBook the keyboard is part of the top case. See keyboard replacement.
  • Files on a dead MacBookThe storage is soldered to the logic board, so getting the board running is how the files are reached. See data recovery.

Quoted for a new logic board?

When a MacBook fails out of warranty, the usual answer is a replacement logic board. On a recent MacBook the processor, memory and storage are all soldered to that one board, so replacing it is most of the cost of the computer.

It can also cost you your files. On most MacBooks from 2016 onward the storage is part of the logic board. Replace the board and anything that was not backed up goes with it.

Board-level repair works the other way round. We measure the power rails on your board, find the part that actually failed, and replace that part. The board, and the storage on it, stay in your MacBook. Not every board can be saved, and you get a quote before any major work starts.

CQ Electronics is an independent repairer, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider. If your MacBook is still covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare for the fault, start with Apple.

Try these first

  • Use a known-good charger and cable of the right wattage. With USB-C the cable matters as much as the charger.
  • Try every USB-C port. Each port has its own controller, so a MacBook that charges from one port but not another has already told you where the fault is.
  • Leave it on charge for 15 minutes, then hold the power button for 10 seconds, let go, and press it once.
  • Shine a torch at the screen in a dark room. A faint image means the Mac is running and the fault is in the backlight, not the whole machine.
  • Plug in an external monitor or TV if you have one. A picture there points at the built-in display.
  • Listen and feel. A fan, a startup chime, a warm base or a caps lock light that switches on and off all mean the board is alive.

Stop and leave it switched off if there has been a spill, a burning smell, a charger that gets hot, or a battery that looks swollen (a base that no longer sits flat, or a trackpad that has become hard to click).

Common questions

Do you repair MacBooks?

Yes. We repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, Intel and Apple silicon models, at component level. CQ Electronics is an independent repairer, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

I was quoted for a new logic board. Can the board be repaired instead?

Often, yes. Most logic board failures come down to one or a few failed parts, such as a USB-C port controller, a shorted capacitor or a corroded connector. We find the failed part and replace it. Not every board can be saved, and you get a quote before any major work starts.

Will I lose my data?

On most MacBooks from 2016 onward the storage is soldered to the logic board, so replacing the board means losing anything that was not backed up. Repairing your original board leaves the storage where it is. If the files matter more than the MacBook, tell us at the start.

My MacBook will not charge or turn on. What should I try first?

Use a known-good charger and cable of the right wattage, try every USB-C port, leave it on charge for 15 minutes, then hold the power button for 10 seconds and press it again. If it charges from one port but not another, the fault is at that port. If nothing changes, it needs board-level diagnosis.

I spilled liquid on my MacBook. What now?

Unplug the charger, hold the power button until it switches off, stand it upside down like a tent, and leave it off. Do not switch it on to test it and do not charge it. Corrosion carries on while the battery is connected, so the sooner the board is opened and cleaned the better.

Should I go to Apple first?

If your MacBook is still covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare for that fault, yes, start with Apple. Liquid damage is not covered by Apple's standard warranty, and for that and for out-of-warranty faults a board-level repair is usually the cheaper route.

Can I post my MacBook to you?

Yes, we accept postal repairs Australia-wide for eligible electronics. Contact us first with the model and fault so we can confirm it is suitable.

Will you beat a cheaper quote from another Brisbane repairer?

Yes. Every MacBook repair booked with CQ Electronics already includes an automatic 5% discount off the quoted price. If you find a genuine lower price for the same repair elsewhere, we will beat it by 5%. The price beat can't be combined with the 5% off, so you get one or the other.
