Laptop Data Recovery Brisbane: Getting Files Off a Dead Laptop

A dead laptop and lost files are two different problems, and the first does not always mean the second. Here is what not to do, where your files really are, and how they are reached when the laptop will not start.

When a laptop dies, the files on it are usually still there. Whether they can be reached depends on what failed and on how the laptop stores them. The first job is to avoid making things worse.

First: stop making it worse

  • If a drive clicks, grinds or beeps, switch it off and leave it off. Every further attempt can do more damage.
  • Do not keep restarting a laptop that struggles to start.
  • Do not run disk repair tools on a drive that is failing. They write to the drive, and can destroy data that was still readable.
  • Do not install recovery software on the drive you are trying to recover. It can overwrite the very files you want.
  • Deleted something by mistake? Stop using the laptop. New data overwrites old. On an SSD the space left by deleted files is cleared in the background, so time matters even more.
  • Do not put a drive in the freezer. It is an old myth and the moisture does harm.

Where your files actually are

A laptop that will not start leads two ways: if the drive can be removed it is read in another computer, and if the storage is soldered to the board the board has to be repaired to reach the files Laptop will not start Drive can be removed Storage soldered to the board Read it in another computer Repair the board to reach the files
The same dead laptop, two very different jobs, depending on how the storage is built.

In older and larger laptops the storage is a separate drive that can be taken out. If the laptop dies but the drive is healthy, the drive is removed and read in another computer, and that is usually straightforward.

In most MacBooks from 2016 onward, and in many thin Windows laptops, the storage is soldered to the motherboard. There is no drive to take out. The only way to the files is to get that board running again, even if only for long enough to copy them off. This is where data recovery and board-level repair become the same job. See MacBook repair Brisbane and our motherboard repair guide.

The common situations

  • Laptop will not turn on, drive is healthy. The best case. The drive is read elsewhere, or the board is repaired.
  • Storage is soldered and the board is dead. The board has to be repaired to reach the files.
  • The drive is failing: very slow, freezing, files going missing, error messages. The whole drive is copied while it can still be read, and the files are taken from the copy.
  • A hard drive that clicks or grinds has a mechanical fault inside. That kind of recovery is done in a clean room. Tell us the symptoms and we will tell you honestly whether it is a job for us or for a specialist lab.
  • Liquid damage. Leave it off and read what to do after a spill.
  • Deleted or formatted. Sometimes recoverable from a hard drive, much less often from an SSD.

Encryption: the key matters as much as the drive

Many recent Windows laptops encrypt the drive without ever asking, and Macs do the same when FileVault is on. An encrypted drive that is perfectly healthy still cannot be read by anyone without the key.

  • Windows: the BitLocker recovery key is normally saved in the Microsoft account the laptop was set up with. Sign in to that account from another device to find it.
  • Mac: you need the login password, or the FileVault recovery key if you wrote one down.

Find the key before you need it, and have it ready when you contact us.
