"Wiggle to charge" is one of the most common complaints we see, and it's not always the charging port at fault. Before booking a repair, it's worth ten minutes ruling out the cheaper, more common causes.
Checks to run before assuming it's the port
- Inspect the port with a torch. Pocket lint packs into the port over months and physically blocks the connector pins from making contact. Don't poke at it with anything metal — a short wooden toothpick or a can of compressed air is the safe way to clear it.
- Try a different cable and a different wall adapter. Cables fail at the connector far more often than ports do, especially cheap or heavily used ones. Swapping both isolates whether the fault is really in the phone.
- Try a different power source. A failing wall adapter, a faulty USB port on a laptop, or a worn car charger can all look exactly like a phone charging fault.
- Check for corrosion. A greenish or crusty residue on the connector pins usually means the phone has been exposed to moisture — charge cautiously and get it looked at rather than forcing a cable in.
- Force restart the phone. Occasionally a charging icon fails to appear due to a software hang rather than a hardware fault.
Signs the port itself has actually failed
- The phone only charges when the cable is held at a specific angle, or with pressure applied
- Charging stops the moment the phone is moved or bumped
- The port feels loose, or a pin looks bent or pushed in when you look closely with a torch
- Data transfer or CarPlay also fails over the same cable, suggesting the connector itself is damaged rather than just the charging circuit
- None of the checks above make any difference across multiple cables and power sources
Why iPhone charging port repair isn't a simple swap
On an iPhone, the charging port isn't a separate module you unclip and replace — it's a small flex cable assembly that's soldered directly onto the logic board, tucked in beside the battery connector and, on many models, integrated with other components on the same flex. Replacing it means safely disconnecting the battery first, carefully desoldering the old connector without lifting the pads it's soldered to, and reflowing the new one in exactly the right position. Get the alignment slightly wrong and the port can sit flush but still fail to make a reliable connection.
This is also why we're cautious about very cheap "charging port replacement" offers — done with the wrong tools or without proper board-level soldering equipment, it's easy to lift a pad off the board entirely, which turns a charging port repair into a much more serious logic board repair.
What our Brisbane repair actually involves
We diagnose first — confirming it's genuinely the port and not the battery, software, or a damaged cable — then carry out the desoldering and rework under magnification with proper board-level equipment, and test charging speed, data transfer and cable retention before handing the phone back.
