A laptop hinge rarely snaps without warning. It gets stiff first, and every time the lid is opened against a stiff hinge the load goes into the small plastic mounting points that hold it. Eventually those tear out. Caught early it is a modest repair. Left alone, it can crack the screen.
Early signs
- A creak or crack when you open or close the lid
- The lid is harder to move than it used to be
- A corner of the case lifts, or a gap opens near the hinge, as the lid moves
- The plastic frame around the screen pops loose at a bottom corner
- The lid wobbles or will not stay where you put it
What to do right now
- Open and close it as little as possible.
- Hold the base down and lift from the top centre of the lid, never from one corner.
- Do not force it shut if something is sticking out. Closing the lid on a loose hinge is how screens get cracked.
- If you must keep using it, leave it open on a desk.
- Do not glue the case together. Glue runs into the hinge and the screen cable, and makes a proper repair harder.
What gets damaged if it is left
The cable that carries the picture to the screen runs through the hinge area, and so do the wifi aerial cables. A hinge that has pulled free pinches and chafes them every time the lid moves. The results are a flickering screen, lines, a screen that goes black at certain angles, or weak wifi. The last stage is the hinge pressing on the back of the panel and cracking it. See our laptop screen guide for those symptoms.
How a hinge is repaired
- The lid and base are opened so the hinge and its mounting points can be seen properly.
- A stiff hinge is freed or replaced. Fixing the plastic without dealing with the stiff hinge just breaks it again.
- The mounting points are rebuilt and reinforced where enough of the plastic is left.
- The lid cover or base is replaced where the plastic is too badly broken to rebuild.
- The screen cable is checked, and the lid is tested through its full movement.
