An Xbox One came into our Brisbane workshop with no picture at all — nothing on screen no matter which HDMI cable, TV or input was tried. The console powered on and sounded normal, which pointed straight at the HDMI port itself rather than a deeper board fault.

What we found on inspection
Under the microscope, the HDMI port had already been pulled hard enough to lift four of its solder pads clean off the board. Once a pad tears away like this, there is no copper left underneath to solder a new port onto directly — the usual reflow-and-replace process will not hold.

Repairing torn pads with wire jumpers
Fixing this properly meant tracing each damaged pad back to its trace or via under a microscope, then hand-soldering an individual jumper wire from that point to the matching pin on a new HDMI port. This isn't ordinary hook-up wire like what's inside a household cable — it's specialist bonding wire roughly three to four times thinner than a human hair, fine enough that it's essentially invisible without magnification. At that scale there's no margin for error: too much heat and the next pad along lifts too; too little and the joint fails the first time the cable gets nudged. This is one of the more demanding repairs on the bench, and it is the difference between a board that gets fixed and one that gets written off as a "no HDMI" board.

How to protect your console's HDMI port
Most torn-pad HDMI failures start the same way: repeated strain on the port from the cable, not a single accident. A few habits make a real difference:
- Unplug the cable by the connector, not by pulling on the cable itself.
- Don't let the cable hang with its own weight pulling sideways on the port — support or clip it instead.
- Avoid wiggling the cable to "fix" a flickering picture; that repeated flexing is exactly what tears pads over time.
- Don't move or knock the console while a cable is still plugged in.
- Use a cable that seats firmly without force, and stop using one that feels loose or wobbly in the port.
- Keep the cable run away from foot traffic, pets and anywhere it can get pulled without warning.
What HDMI port replacement usually costs
A straightforward HDMI port swap, where the old connector comes off cleanly and the pads are still intact, is a relatively quick job. When several pads have been torn from the board — like this case — the repair needs individual wire reconstruction for each one, which takes considerably longer and calls for board-level microsoldering. For jobs at that end, expect a repair cost in the $150–$200 range, depending on how many pads need to be rebuilt and the condition of the surrounding board.
If a console has stopped outputting picture and the HDMI port looks damaged or loose, it is worth having it looked at before more pads get pulled off trying to force a cable back in. We see this fault regularly across Brisbane, usually from a cable that's been tugged or knocked one too many times.
