Most households in Brisbane have at least one electronic device sitting in a drawer because it "just died" one day. In a lot of cases, the actual fault is a single failed component — a capacitor, a connector, a charging chip — not the whole unit. Component-level repair means finding and fixing that one part instead of writing off the entire device.
What electronics we repair in Brisbane
If it has a circuit board, a charging port, a power supply or a connector, there's a good chance we can diagnose and repair it rather than replace it:
- Phones & tabletsScreens, charging ports, batteries, liquid damage and board-level faults. See our iPhone screen replacement and iPad screen replacement guides.
- Laptops & computersMotherboard diagnosis, no-power faults, charging circuits and screens. See our laptop motherboard repair and laptop screen replacement guides.
- Game consolesHDMI ports, no-power faults, overheating and board assessment. See our Xbox HDMI port replacement guide and our guide to a console that won't turn on or overheats.
- Household appliances & power toolsPower supplies, motor controllers and circuit-board faults in everyday household electronics. See our brushless drill controller repair case study.
- Vehicle electronics & ECUsWiring, connectors, power and communication faults in vehicle control modules. See our ECU repair case study.

The most common reason household electronics die
Across the repairs we see, a small number of root causes account for most failures: aged electrolytic capacitors that dry out or leak and corrode nearby traces, connectors and charging ports worn out from thousands of insert-and-remove cycles, power supplies that degrade after years of daily use, and corrosion from moisture that quietly damages a board long before any visible symptom shows up. None of these mean the whole device is beyond saving — they mean one part of it has worn out.
Basic checks before you assume it's dead
- Test the power source first. Try a different power outlet, a different charger or power adapter, and check the cable for visible damage. A dead adapter is far more common — and far cheaper — than a dead device.
- Check fuses and safety switches. A tripped safety switch or a blown fuse in the plug can make a perfectly healthy appliance look completely dead.
- Look and smell before you plug in again. Discolouration, a burnt smell, or a bulging capacitor are signs to stop and get it looked at rather than keep testing it yourself.
- Do a full power cycle. Unplug the device, wait a minute, then reconnect — this clears a surprising number of "dead" faults caused by a power-management lock-up rather than actual damage.
- Note when it started. A fault that appeared right after a storm, a spill, or a drop points the diagnosis in a very different direction than one that developed gradually over months.
Warning signs — stop and unplug immediately
- Any burning smell or visible scorching around a component or power cord
- Sparking, arcing, or a buzzing sound from a power supply or outlet
- A swollen or leaking battery — never continue charging or using a device with a puffed-up battery
- Exposed or frayed internal wiring
- Any device that has been submerged or heavily doused in liquid — don't power it on to "test" it
Why board-level repair beats "just buy a new one"
Most consumer electronics are built around one main circuit board carrying dozens of individual components. When a device fails, it's usually one of those components — not the entire board — that's actually broken. With the right test equipment, that failed component can be found and replaced directly, at a fraction of the cost of a full replacement device, without sending a repairable appliance to landfill. We wrote about why proper test equipment matters for this kind of diagnosis in our oscilloscope vs multimeter article.
What to expect when you bring a device to CQ Electronics
We diagnose first using proper test equipment rather than guessing, give you a clear quote before any work starts, and repair at component level wherever the device allows it — so you're not paying for a full replacement when a single part swap will do.
5% off every repair, or a 5% price beat
No competitor quote needed for the discount: every repair booked with CQ Electronics in Brisbane comes with an automatic 5% discount off the quoted price, on any device we work on. And if you find a genuine lower price for the same repair elsewhere, we will beat it by 5%. The price beat can't be combined with the 5% off, so you get one or the other.
